The painting shows us Christ carrying the cross, resigned to his fate, in front of a dense mass of grimacing soldiers and malicious people, one of them bearing the familiar toad on his shield.

In the foreground, soldiers torment the bad thief while the good thief kneels before a priest, the intensity of his confession well-expressed by the open-mouthed profile, the presence of the priest being, of course, a deliberate anachronism.
