The image of this square nowadays is determined by the wide main facade of the Town Hall to the north, a group of privately owned, commercially used buildings to the west – the corner house at the southern end of this row displaying a facade transferred here from elsewhere in the city –, the Schütting and several business buildings to the south and the modern Haus der Bürgerschaft to the east. With the exception of the town hall, all of the buildings around the Markt had to be restored or entirely reconstructed after World War II. The Haus der Bürgerschaft is nevertheless the only modern building on the square.
