Seeing Eye puppies in training take a celebratory "town walk" with their trainers upon completion of their initial training. This is a photo of Odette, a puppy my friend raised for the seeing eye on the day of her town walk. She is shown with her trainer after completing the walk. Seeing Eye puppies live with a family for the first 18 months of their lives before going into formal training. At that point the families who raised them no longer have contact with the dog. Dogs have to pass very stringent requirements to finally become a guide dog and are dropped from the program for what we might think are very minor reasons. Odie (Odette) was dropped from the program a few months after this photo was taken and my friend was given the opportunity to adopt her, which she did. The dog my friend raised before Odie was also dropped and adopted by her.
