Battle of the Grass Hoppers

Memory Shot

Frankly, this turn of events surprised me.

There were two grass hopper sitting on the pavement. Since I've only done one grasshopper photo this year, I decided to get down and photograph these two separately. One was quite little and the other was bigger. They were apart and difficult to get a good angle on for a nice shot.

However, when I aimed my lens at the small fellow first, he unexpected leaped on top of the bigger one (some distance away)& a wrestling match followed. I totally wasn't expecting that. My photo shows the motion blur.

The action was fast and confusing, but I stil got several shots. This was the first in the series. In my last photo, the bigger grass hopper was on top of the smaller one that had attacked him. They then disappeared into the bushes. So I don't know how things ended.I would assume the bigger guy won.

And now I know. Grasshoppers will fight.

Male Differential grasshopper, Melanoplus differentialis, (top), trying to mate with female. Apparently she is not receptive.

This is a very cool shot. I wonder if this was a fight over territory or what? You were lucky to see it and capture it. Great job!

Ha! Very cool. Are you sure it isn't just the kid hopping on pop in fun?! Just kidding. Not only great that you saw this interesting interaction, but that you were able to capture it too!
