This is one of four places where the road on Crater Island was less than hospitable. Other motorists had created this by-pass. I was happy to use it, as the Green Weenie was in "street mode" and could not tackle the deep eroded channel. The by-pass was eroded too, so I had to ply cut-and-fill with a shovel before driving through. That took about 25 minutes. This is what I had to endure to reach the mud flat of Crater Island, which was my goal.
In the distance is a bush in the road and beyond that a row of stones someone placed to warn others of the problem ahead. This photo looks back toward where I came from.
The low area at the base of the mountains is Donner-Reed Pass, a place traveled by the ill-fated Donner party of the mid-1800s. Today most cars can drive over the pass on the Silver Island Backcountry Byway.
