Great golden digger wasp (Sphex ichneumoneus)

Fletcher Wildlife Garden

One of the large Thread-waisted wasps (Sphecidae), common in late summer, this one nectaring on mountain mint. They prey on crickets and katydids with which they provision their underground nest. They paralyze the poor insect, lay an egg on it, and when the egg hatches, the larvae proceed to eat the paralyzed prey.
