Birth of a Black Swallowtail Butterfly (5 photos)

The caterpillar went into a chrysalis on Aug 10th and on the 21st it started
to thin until the butterfly's spots started showing through. It stayed in this state
all day the 22nd as it was pouring rain.

I checked at 5:50pm, the rain had stopped and all was the same and then at 5:55pm it emerged.
The wings were damp and crumpled and I had to transfer it to a thicker stick as it had trouble hanging on to this thin one.

I took it outside and put it on a zinnia where it hung all night with
the wings folded and damp.

In spite of a cold wind all night it survived and as the first ray of sunshine reached it
next morning the butterfly opened up instantly. It stayed on the flower then flew to the
brick wall of the house where it was really warm. After an hour it flew off and out of the yard.

This is all the remains of my butterfly - the shell of the chrysalis.
