My Aunt Anna was the closest thing to a grandmother that I ever knew. She was born in 1888 and died in 1984. This photo was taken when she was in nurses training, which involved a lot of physical labor back then. Anna was my great grandmother's younger sister. My mother told me stories of Aunt Anna coming home at night with swollen legs and feet and wanting to quit nursing. My great grandmother would soak and massage her feet and urge her to stick with it. She did stick with it and was an army nurse during WWI. She was no nonsense and strict, but caring also. She was the kind of lady who starched and ironed her sheets and never went out without hat, purse and gloves.
