Manuel Pico a whaler from from Portugal who jumped ship in Hawaii later became Superintendent of Roads in Maui.
His last name Pico was translated as Piko in Hawaiian referring to the genitals.
Understandably, it was changed to the more acceptable Paiko.
He originally leased then bought 400 acres of land in this area.
