The Shadow: Female Osprey

Iroquois Locks
Iroquois, ON

The female Osprey flew away from the nest (about 1 Km); then returned. As she approached the nest upon her return I was shooting, hoping to catch her pre-landing flare. I didn't realize until I was curating the shots that she had a shadow….a Blackbird was chasing her and flared at exactly the same moment. The next frame showed the blackbird clearly below the Osprey, so this was an incredibly lucky bit of timing. The blackbird's tail can be seen below the Osprey's left wing; and the beak and a bit of the eye of the blackbird can be seen above the left wing.

Terrific interaction shot Doug. These Blackbirds are sure brave, but of course much more agile than the Osprey.

Very interesting capture. The osprey doesn't seem to care about having a shadow.

A nice image of this Osprey in flight, I like the wing position...
