5-30-2016 Red Naped Sapsucker

Just got back from a few days in Plain, Washington. Great
bird watching this time of year. This particular bird is
I think fairly rare this far west.
They bore holes in the bark and come back to drink the sap - hence the name :)

this is a super shot, more so with the colourful background.
Most interesting that the birds have to come back later
to drink the fruits of their labors.
