June 2, 2016

We spent the whole day in Bismarck, North Dakota. It is the state capital and has a population of 68,000.It even has a Wal-Mart but no Walgreens. We had a visit to the capitol building first thing in the morning. It was built in 1935 to replace the former building which burned in 1930. It is a high rise done in art deco. There are three other high rise capitols: Lincoln, Tallahassee and Baton Rouge. There were no school groups, so Ginny and I were the only ones on the 8:00 am tour.

During the rest of the day we visited the old governor's mansion and went out to Mandan, ND, to see Fort Abraham Lincoln and the On-The-Slant Mandan Indian village. You may not be familiar with Fort Abraham Lincoln. It was the home of the US 7th Cavalry in 1876. That was George Custer's regiment. It was from here that Custer headed out to the Little Big Horn. One fact that I learned was that Custer's brothers Boston and Thomas and his brother in law James Calhoun and nephew Henry Reed were also killed in the engagment.

It seems that we pick up new and interesting information just about everywhere we go. That is the fun of it.

I already knew about Custer's brothers John.
So I got to look elsewhere for my newly learned facts today.
