Short-tailed Weasel

A couple of us were attempting to get some shots of warblers in the bushes in front of us when suddenly a weasel jumps out of the bush almost right at our feet. At first I thought it was a long-tailed weasel because of its size - it was much bigger than any short-taileds I had seen - but consulting the books at home revealed it was most definitely a short-tailed because of it’s white undersides; long-taileds have organish undersides.

The weasel was still long enough to get this one shot and then took off running down the shoreline. The lot of us also took off running because we could see it was heading towards a boat launch where it would eventually have to come out into the open to proceed further along the shoreline, so we thought we would wait there and sure enough, he popped out the edge of the shoreline and ran out into the open, but the weasel stopped dead in its tracks when an angry Canada Goose in its path caught sight of the slender little predator and went into aggressive mode hissing and trying to shoo it away. It allowed some of us to get a couple more shots (next photo) before the weasel was back on the run, first back and forth from the edge of the boat launch unsure about the feathered bully or us tall creatures with cameras and then finally it bulleted across the boat launch between all our legs and that was that.

Oh he is gorgeous. I don't see these often enough! It is always a treat to catch a glimpse. Love your shot of this inquisitive and probably not overly happy, little creature. V
