A Rising Star

The 16 B-25s that took off from the aircraft carrier USS Hornet in the Doolittle Raid conducted the first air raid on the Japanese home islands. It was in retaliation for the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. To conduct the raid the bombers flew beyond fighter support, and the mission served as a big morale boost for US forces.
