Moki Dugway

Route 261, Southern Utah

Moki is the name that early Spanish Explorers gave to the indigenous Pueblo Indians that inhabited the region. The dugway, (gravel road) is cut into a nearly vertical 1,100' cliff that travels 3 miles at an 11° grade. It was constructed in 1958 by Texas Zinc, a mining company, to transport uranium ore from the "Happy Jack" mine in Fry Canyon, UT. to the processing mill in Mexican Hat.
