Yellow-bellied sapsucker, male

West Ottawa

These woodpeckers have been migrating into our area in the last few weeks, and are, I think, one of our prettiest local woodpeckers. Unlike the Hairy, Downy and Pileated Woodpeckers, our three commonest woodpeckers, which are resident year-round, the sapsuckers migrate south for the winter.

Wonderful close up shot. I've had one in my backyard for three days on a maple tree.

What a beautiful bird, with lovely color and patterns in the feathers. An excellent capture of this one hard at work. V.
