A mama wolf spider peeks over her shoulder as she tries to protect her egg sack from an inquisitive photographer (me).

Traveller, the lens was probably near (if not at) its minimum focal distance of 1.5 feet from the spider and it was at its maximum 120mm zoom. Plus, the original image has been cropped a bit. - Ken

I agree with Paul...and maybe even the idea that this is better, more spooky, without the added DOF. And yes, a swivel screen can very useful in this context.

How close was the lens to this beastie?

Thanks, Jim. Thanks, Paul. Everything I've read on the D750 says it's one of the best high ISO cameras on the market right now and, so far, my limited experience with the camera bears that out. In this instance, though, I had to shoot quick and didn't really have much time to experiment with different settings as the spider wanted to be on her way and find some protective cover. While I admit the image could be a bit sharper (my fault, not the camera's), I'm relatively pleased with the out come ... could have been much worse! :) - Ken

How does that camera handle noise, say at 1600? That would have given you F11 which would have given you a few more mm of depth but in reality I like it just as it is. Real spooky, mysterious and eerie looking! Paul

Yes, this is a beauty - a really fine capture.

Yes, more depth of field would have been nice ... I was hand-holding the camera just above the ground, so it was difficult to get the focus exactly where I wanted it. Luckily, the D750 has a swivel view screen, which helped a lot. - Ken

Scary! But I bet you wished you had a greater DOF?

Or not.

Thanks, Paul. It was pure luck that I saw this spider in the back yard this afternoon. - Ken

Now this is wicked, very wicked........... Our wolf's don't lay eggs until the fall. Seriously love this shot. Paul
