Built in 1845, designed by John Medlan Clark, the customs house is one of the most commanding buildings in Ipswich and especially on the waterfront where 'Gyppeswyk' is thought to have begun. Pretty near impossible to photograph, as, even if you got yourself onto the bridge of a boat in mid-river, it would still be grossly defaced by notices and a stupidly placed lifebouy. Emanating from a Greek revival around 1840, was a style of architecture with huge eaves overhangs and elegant proportions (for which there is no popular label)
