I wish I could say that we're seeing the season turn to the usually delightful weather of a Sydney autumn. After all, the official start date (here, at least) is this very date.
We aren't. The heat is hanging on tenaciously, and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.
But the orbit of the planet goes on, and it is noticeably darker on my walk from the city to the office of late compared to only a week or two previously. As I was crossing Pyrmont Bridge I noticed this arrangement of cranes over at the old Convention Centre construction site which, with the anti-collision light, reminded me of that scene in the movie E.T. You know that scene, right? Hey, even I know that scene and I've never seen the movie.
The ambient light was just at that sweet spot where it wasn't so dark that the dynamic range went to hell in a handbasket, but also not light enough to drown out the artificial lighting. And there was a little bit of luck in that the construction of the new 5 star hotel was up to floor 19 and "19" can be kinda sorta be made to sound like "ET" if you use enough imagination and stop yourself thinking in Italian, since "diciannove" really doesn't sound anything like E.T. Sorry, I probably shouldn't have mentioned that.
(Incidentally, I was pretty pleased with this as a hand held shot, considering the light. Obviously I opened way, way up and dropped the exposure a little, though the picture could bear it.)
