Harbour and The Candlestick

Whitehaven, Cumbria

The 'Candlestick', the tall structure just right of centre dates from 1850 and was a part of the ventilation system for the local coal mine.

The black buildings are a harsh reminder of the old days of the Coal Miner.

What an interesting image. They have the Candlestick really close to the water. I am wondering if there was any leakage in the mine. There is a place in eastern Canada that they mined under the bay for coal. V.
