Oil paint on canvas
Rossetti admired Dante's autobiographical poem "Vita Nuova",
about the medieval Italian poet's passion for Beatrice Portinari.
This painting features Rossetti's muse Jane Morris as Beatrice.
It represents Dante's dream of the day Beatrice died.
Love (with the arrow) leads him to her bedside.
The poppies signify the sleep of death. (Walker Art Gallery.)
Note. Love has also been refered to as Cupid.
