This is one of the unique attractions of Lanzarote - often referred to as a symbol of Lanzarote.
It is symbolic of the two natural forces that created and carved the island over the millennia: volcanic and sea water.
The lagoon was created when an ancient volcanic crater collapsed under its own weight and the cavity filled with seawater.
Plant organisms and marine algae thrived in the lagoon due to the presence of minerals of volcanic origin.
This gives the lagoon its characteristic color green.
