This shows the padding I added to the strap of my camera holster. The nylon webbing strap is slung over my left shoulder and glued to a piece of leather. The leather in turn is glued to the yellow scrubbing surface of a car-washing sponge. This padding eliminates the sore neck I experienced when using the original strap, which was wider but had no padding.
This customization didn't cost much. The leather was free, having been salvaged years ago when my wife discarded a pair of shoes. While in Moab I bought the sponge for a dollar. Gluing the strap, leather, and sponge together was done with flexible fabric glue that I bought at a fabric shop for about two dollars. The strap, made by me, was assembled from webbing and webbing hardware I had on hand.
A year earlier I tried a simpler solution while in Moab.
It involved taping the strap to the sponge with Gorilla Tape. (Link goes to flickr.)
The red cord is the shoulder strap for my map case.
