Bohemian waxwings are similar to the more locally common cedar waxwings, but are somewhat larger and sturdier in build. Their undertail coverts are also a distinctive rusty colour. Some winters, enormous flocks can appear in the region, hundreds and hundreds of birds (I can recall flocks of well over 500 birds in the Arboretum a few years back), other years they are entirely absent, and in still other winters may only appear sporadically in small numbers. However, if there are crabapples or buckthorn shrubs, keep an eye out for these guys. Here, Barry photographed them eating crabapples. (CH)
