Ottoman Empire, ca. 1676-1687
The muslim holy scriptures were frequently executed in decorative style.
The illuminations in this copy are exquisitely executed, and include a full page sarloughs on the first two pages.
Written in a beautiful calligraphic style, it is brilliantly decorated in gold and color.
The following epigraph appears on the fly leaf:
"This copy of the koran has been bequeathed by the late Grand Vizier and Conqueror of the Island of Crete, Ahmed Pasha (may he rest in peace) for home readings on Fridays.
