CAC Boomerang

Temora, NSW, Australia view map

1R2A1040.jpg
Designed & first prototype produced in 120 days in 1942 following attack on Pearl Harbour using many components from the CAC Wirraway.
The only engines available was the 1200hp Pratt & Whitney radial which in reality was underpowered against the similarly powered but significantly lighter Mitsubishi Zero that would be expected to meet in the air from the Japanese Navy. It was however well suited to ground support where t carried 2 x 500lb bombs along with 2 x 20mm cannon and 4 x .303 calibre machine gun.
Remained in service until the end of WW2.

This example was restored by Matt Denning over a 28 year period. Read the story here http://3rdstories.yolasite.com/matt-denning.php
