Michelangelo's Madonna and Child (1504) was the only one of Michelangelo's works to leave Italy in his lifetime and is today one of the few that can be seen outside of Italy. Originally made for the Cathedral of Sienna, it was bought by two Brugge merchant brothers and donated to the Church of Our Lady in 1514. The sculpture was twice recovered after being looted by foreign occupiers: French revolutionaries around 1794 and the Nazis in 1944.
