"The Children of the Duc de Bouillon", by: Pierre Mignard (taken on 10/18/2015)

Honolulu Museum of Art:

Pierre Mignard (French, 1612-1695)
The Children of the Duc de Bouillon, 1647
Oil on canvas
Purchase, Robert Allerton Fund, 1975

Pierre Mignard worked both in France and in Italy as a portraitist and painter for powerful patrons such as the Duc de Bouillon, who throughout his life oscillated between resolute support of and violent opposition to King Louis XIII and his chief minister, Cardinal Richelieu. The children depicted in this meticulously painted portrait are three of the Bouillon family's nine children. All wear fashionable and expensive clothing that indicates the family's wealth and prestige. The two boys play with s small dog, while the young girl, on the cusp of womanhood, presents the viewer with a satchel of flowers and cherries, symbols of femininity and fecundity.

@ Alan,

Thanks for commenting on pbase, Alan! :) ..when I frequented the museums in the San Francisco Golden Gate Park, wasn't into photography then, but I thought remembering seeing people taking pictures without flash.. but times must have changed.. so far with the many museum/historic places I've been here in Hawaii, I don't hide my camera or conceal it in any ways, taking pictures has not been prohibited in any ways, all they ask is to not use any flash when taking pictures.. I guess I'm lucky here in Hawaii, they are allowing us to take pictures.. the only places I've encountered here not able to take pictures are certain stores, I guess they don't want other stores to copy what they are doing..

John :)

Beautiful artwork, and they didn't have a local art shop to get their materials from.

Quite nicely taken and post processed John!

I'm just amazed that the museum allows folks to copy paintings with camera's! I've NEVER seen that allowed in SF or LA or here in Tucson! Not even a little town's museum of copper mining paraphernalia!
