The columns, in phorphyry, basalt, granite and stone from Montjuïc Mountain rise up to different heights and, from the capital, or rather the knot, they branch off in diverse directions and heights with the aim that each column support the roof at various points. This is supported, section by section , over each ramification of the column, so that the exterior flying buttresses can be omitted, necessary in Gothic constructions, to stop the weight forcing it to the sides. This space has been constructed as a result of the new technologies of calculation and the computer-assisted drawings assigned to the technical office of the temple . The structural whole, as Gaudí wanted, looks like a wood, symbolic and almost real, with the roof above, of stone and well balanced. We find ourselves before a prodigy of Gaudian art and of the most sophiticated technique.
