Byzantine amphora’s.
Wooden barrels started to become popular in the 2nd century AD and were used also for maritime trade during the 2nd and 4th centuries AD. It reduced the manufacture of transport amphora’s, especially in Italy and the Northern Regions.
In the Aegean region, Palestine and North African countries amphora’s remained in use until the 7th century AD. Christian monasteries in the East Mediterranean and Aegean coast used amphora’s with a ridged body to carry wine and olive oil in the 9th – 13th century AD, coated on the inside with resin and with a top sealed by broken pieces of pottery.
