The lighthouse is the third incarnation in the island's history - originally it was constructed during WWII as an anti-aircraft tower and is the only structure which survived the bombing in 1947. In 1952 it was repurposed as the strongest lighthouse in Germany - casting its light 28 nautical miles. During the cold war years the tower also doubled as nuclear shelter
