Week 1: Trauma chopper
by Breezanemom

Casselberry, FL

This is how they load people into the local "trauma chopper".
Not from the side of the helicopter, but from the back.
It's a small, narrow space, but they said they can handle people up to 400 pounds, depending on their fuel load and the distance they have to travel.
I would not ever want to be in the back, even though I know the Medics and Nurses who fly these choppers are excellent at what they do.

Thank you, Liz. The medic climbs in the side and is at the patient's head. Pretty much everything below the waist would be almost impossible to get to in flight, unless someone was sitting in the small area next to the patient on the right in the picture (very cramped) - I'm told that only happens very rarely, mostly due to weight issues.

Scenes like this are difficult to photograph to look interesting. You did a very good job, Lisa. Does a medic also fit into the cramped space? I've watched a couple of Heli Medivacs in progress, but those have only been with larger, side loading helicopters. This is more in line with what some of the local hospitals use. Very interesting to see. You did a good job in the photo documentary.

Nicely shot, Lisa. Looks like an efficient set up. Fun to be able to see it up close like this.
