Pelican patrol, Mission Beach, California, 2015

Pelicans on the hunt for a meal usually travel in groups as they sweep low over the waves in search of prey. This trio of pelicans, skimming over the rich blue waters of the Pacific Ocean on an early September morning, creates a horizontal thrust, echoing the flow of the soft waves that gather below them. Those waves are deceptive – the surf is running high, and the surging greenish wave anchoring the image at the bottom of the frame is far larger and full of foam. It is this contrast between the smooth horizontal glide of the pelicans and the massive horizontal crash of surf against a sandy beach that tells the story here.

That is exactly why I made this image. The whole point in is the matching patterns.

The foam patterns in the wave seem to echo the essence of flight of the birds.

Thanks, Nancy, for your observations regarding the pelican. Yes, they certainly look prehistoric. We see them on every visit to the Southern California beaches. However I only saw them early in the morning or at the end of the day. They usually came team up like this to hunt as a flight. In this case three sets of eyes are better than one.

Between the battalion of Pelican's and the gem-like green wave providing such a beautiful bed for the flock…this photo gets my vote! I've only seen Pelican's twice in my life - here on the Washington Coast and on a beach in Naples, Florida. Both occasions found me so taken with the prehistoric look of these creatures, that I never got a photo!
