First views of Maligne Lake from the trail

We continued to Maligne Lake and held our breath; the conditions were improving. It was still cloudy with a few sprinkles, but we decided it was doable and were on our way to hike Bald Hills. The hike to Bald Hills Lookout Site is 10.4 km/6.4 miles round trip with an elevation gain of 480 m/1575 ft and there are additional trails to hike to higher, additional viewpoints (adds anywhere from 2 km/1.2 miles - 4 km/2.5 miles depending on how much further you hike).

The trail is an old fire road to the lookout site with an option of taking a steeper, shorter single-track foot path at 2.5 km/1.6 miles, which is what we did. We hiked through lodgepole pine forest before merging into open meadows with stands of stunted alpine fir. Where it started to open up we had our first views of Maligne Lake.
