the stadium, at Delphi,
sits at the top of the “panhellenic sanctuary” on Mount Parnassus,
Phocis, Greece. The “track” which is 177m long and 25.5m wide
was (originally) built during the fifth century BC and remodelled,
under the patronage of Herodes Atticus (a distinguished and rich
Greek aristocrat and sophist, who served as a Roman senator and
held the rank of consul ordinarius) during the second century AD.
The remodelling included the (stone) seating for 6,500 spectators.
