Many years of photographing the wild mustangs have enabled me to see many things. But my last visit was amazing. While shooting the horses as they foraged in an elevated area among large boulders, I noticed a group of horses making noise and moving restlessly nearby. Going closer to the horses for a better view, I could see that a young mare was just ready to give birth; walking gingerly about among the rocky landscape with three older mares protecting her from other curious horses that sensed something was going to happen. In fact, the newborn was presenting itself from the rear of the mother as she laid down to complete the process.
Growing up on a ranch, I have witnessed the birth of many newborn animals, but to arrive and film the birth of a wild mustang is a first. The wild herds have come to trust me enough that they allow me to walk near them. I climbed up on a car-sized rock and took hundreds of images and lots of video of the event. The time from birth to the newborn being able to stand up was about 22 minutes. The band's stallion and father stands here in the image with three or four mares watching over the young mare as she delivers.
More photos and perhaps a gallery with images from this single event will be coming as soon as I can process and go through 800 images.
