Constructed in the 1800s of locally quarried limestone, this building once housed
a factory that made buttons from mussels harvested from the nearby Fox River.
Small circular discs were sawn from the shells, ground to uniform thickness, punched
with a couple holes, and then polished to create mother of pearl buttons. Operations
continued until plastic became a more economical choice of material early in the twentieth century.
The building now (2015) houses an aluminum foundry.
