Carved from the cliff face this magnificent work pays tribute to the 600 Swiss Guards who died defending the French Monarchy during the French Revolution. It appears they ran out of ammunition and were overwhelmed by the mobs of revolutionaries. Switzerland now has a policy of strict neutrality.
The lion has a broken spear in its back and has it face laying on a shield of France while the shield of Switzerland stands upright.
