We turned in our rent car this afternoon. Here is the tale of the odometer. A total of 4624 kilometers (2890 miles) in about 26 days. The amount of gas we purchased calculates to 272.8 liters. The going price per liter was ISK 225. At the current exchange rate that was about $461. In gallons, we used 72. That makes it about $6.40 per gallon. Current price here at the local station is $2.45.
Our car was a Ford Focus. It had a 6 speed transmission. For the adventure we were on I liked the standard transmission because we spent a lot of time on hilly, windy, gravel roads. Having complete control of the gears is very good in that situation. It was pretty comfortable, considering the size. I look forward to the return to our Odyssey, however. We are heading out for 10 weeks this coming Sunday.
If we had not rented a car and had taken bus excursions and public transportation, there is no way in hell we could have seen and done as much as we did. Driving Iceland is a most righteous way to spend a month.
