Tarantula Hawk

Tucson,AZ

The tarantula hawk gets it name from the fact that it hunts tarantulas, stings them and then lays its eggs in them (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarantula_hawk for more info). Fellow pbaser and Tucsononian, Sam Rua, has captured an amazing sequence of the Tarantula Hawk in action: http://www.pbase.com/pegsam/image/151325828. I found this one lying in my yard, recently dead, and set it up to be photographed. It is about 1.5 inches long. I used focus stacking image software to drive my camera through a laptop to get the basic image. This one looks best in "original".

Awesome capture! The exposure is excellent and the technique really yielded a nice sharp image. ~BV~ I definitely want to hear the details on how you did this.

Very cool capture --- especially with the singer exposed. I think they are pretty wasps but try to discourage them from hanging around our property; I'd rather have tarantulas.
