Another day of sunny weather here in Iceland. That is nice. We had a drive today that was over a lot of dirt road along mountainsides with no guard rails. We have done this quite a bit, but I am still a bit queezy when passing oncoming cars and we are on the outside. It is funny the extent you rejoice internally when you drive off the dirt road onto a real asphalt road. Again, easily amused.

The highlight of the day was a visit to a foundry and machine shop in Thingeyri. It was established in 1913 and operated until rather recently (1995 or there about). We got a tour of the place from a fellow that helps to operate it for demonstrations and other purposes. As a matter of fact they were casting metal there last week. All of the machines are in operating condition. The overhead power transmission system and all the belts are in operation. He fired the thing up and showed how the power takeoffs are controlled for all of the machines. It was quite a sight to see all those wheels turning and then operate the lathes, drill presses and other machines in the shop. I could have stayed there all day and just watched. Some fellow was working a piece on one of the lathes. Again, I thought of John Cooper. His love of machines of all types would certainly be tickled here.

We stopped at yet another magnificent waterfall in the afternoon. We took magnificent pictures. We climbed to the magnificent viewpoint. We enjoyed the magnificent view. We observed the magnificent rainbows. We got into our magnificent car and made a magnificent getaway. Ran out of adjectives so I had to keep recycling. Sorry.

Given the opportunity, I would
come and volunteer to work
at this place as long
as I got a chance to learn how
to use the machines and do the
casting.

Iceland sounds like a magnificent place.
My first job at age 15 was in a machine shop, similar to this, slightly more modern.
48 hour week (hardwork) for £2 10s per week (£2.50p).
