I just read the history of the subway; it probably seemed like a good idea at the time (1918), but it's striking that even in the glory days the money just wasn't there to cover the costs. 50 years later and they still haven't filled this bit in or otherwise repurposed it. Maybe it's just me but I can't help thinking that decay begets decay, as your documentation of the town shows.
