130803_151753_30322 - Lancaster 1

RAAF Association of WA Museum, Bull Creek, Western Australia

The museum has a Mk VII Lancaster, which was apparently the last variant built. This one had a few changes to the design which made it more suitable for Pacific theatre operations, and was intended to be used during the invasion of Japan. (Though with the US using the SuperFortress, an aircraft which was literally a generation ahead of the design of the Lancaster, one would have to wonder why the allies would deploy a faithful but ageing design in such a role.)

The website has very little detail regarding the squadron deployments of this example. However once again, there is no questioning the work that they did to restore it to pristine condition.

The registration number carried on the fuselage is NX622, and the squadron marking is JO-D. That, I believe, was the designation used for number 463 squadron RAAF, but as far as I have been able to determine they used only Mk I and Mk III versions of the Lancaster. However it is possible that they were intended to be re-equipped with this; of course, it's also possible that the museum just dummied up the insignia with a plausible squadron designation.
