Within a short distance, perhaps less than a mile, from the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse there are several freshwater ponds. It is one of the curious features of barrier islands and ocean coastlines that within a very short distance inland of the salt water, fresh water ponds and marshes can usually be found. Having visited one of these ponds on a previous trip to The Outer Banks, I returned there hoping to find an egret or a turtle and not much more. To my amazement I was able to see, in a short period, two bucks and three does, one of which was nursing a fawn. In addition, there was an egret, several turtles, a nutria and an osprey. Unfortunately the osprey was too far even for the 500 mm to reach. Here is the first image: two bucks, two does and a visiting egret.
