In the Frontier Prison in Rawlins, there is a room with a steel post in the center.
A small window with a door is located on the wall that separates this room from the cell block.
Guards would sometimes tie an inmate to this pole and beat the prisoner with rubber hoses and
billy clubs. They would open the door to the window so those in the cell block could
hear the screams.
At some point, the prisoners were given permission to paint their cells. They could choose paint
color. One of the prisoners chose to paint a self portrait. Apparently, this was not allowed
because the guards hauled the prisoner to the adjacent room, tied him to the pole,
and beat him to death.
