Aunque fue fundada por los griegos es considerada, Comares, como la principal fortaleza militar musulmana desde el siglo VIII. Supongo que costó tiempo reconquistarla, simplemente con dejarla sin agua ni comida. Durante el imparable avance del ejército de los Reinos de Castilla y Aragón, la Comarca de la Axarquía fue la última en resistir por su inmejorable situación geográfica (imposible tomarla en campo abierto). La gran mayoría de la población embarcó al Norte de Africa, los que se resistieron murieron, el resto (aprox. 20 familias en Comares) se convirtió al cristianismo.
