Dogfight

Valley of Fire State Park, Clark County, NV view map

*** Best view at original size ***

Glenn and I were treated to a battle between two red-tailed hawks and two ravens. It turned out that this one
raven chased two hawks from a jackrabbit carcass. Amazing that a bird of prey would not be the victor in a
skirmish with a raven, but the hawks know it's best not to risk injury. And I'm certain that the higher intelligence
of the raven means they realize that as well and use that knowledge to their advantage.

Great sequence of action shots and good timing! I was wondering what would challenge a hawk, aside from maybe an eagle. Guess a Raven would...BTW, a coyote apparently jump my fence and killed the baby hawk who was just starting to fly.

Amazing series of shots... ravens do often win in these skirmishes! And the poor jackrabbit in its demise is helping a lot of creatures live. V

Terrific set of action images Sam. I once watched a bunch of Turkey Vultures steal a Coot from a Peregrine Falcon. The Falcon knew it was outnumbered and headed for the hills.
