Bitterroot Lewisia rediviva

Lincoln County, Washington

These beautiful flowers sprout on the thin soils of basalt outcrops in the sagebrush basin area and rocky montane ridges. Native Americans harvested the fleshy roots in the Spring. Captain Meriwether Lewis collected a sample during the Lewis and Clark mission and the name Bitterroot was given to many geographical features in Montana, including the Bitterroot River and the Bitterroot mountain range.
