Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus)

Burnt Lands Provincial Park, Almonte, ON.

A team of us found and subsequently removed this owl from a completely unnecessary barbed wire fence and placed it into The Wild Bird Care Centre, Ottawa. Amazingly, the wing was not broken.

What is this old fence still doing in a Provincial Park, serving no purpose, other than killing and maiming animals?

An update: This bird is now deceased. It did not recover from it's injuries.
Here's another update: The fence remains to stop yahoos burning up The Burntlands P.P. with their ATVs and killing all the sparrows and ruining the alvar habitat- we need some stiffer sentences!

This is awful... there are far too many of those unnecessary fences in all sorts of natural areas, left over from earlier times. They need to be taken down. This poor creature... I hope it can survive. thank goodness you and others were there to help.

Pretty horrific image! Let us hope that it makes it. I sent it and the story to local press. Hopefully, the wire comes down one day soon.
