Urgent Notice

Picked up from listening in at this past Thursday's reunion committee meeting:

The reunion committee is requesting to have all event registration forms and attendance notifications
by no later than April 15th, this coming Wednesday.
This is to provide the head counts requested by the venues, especially for the May 24th and October events.
Apparently those forms and notifications have been slow in coming in, thus the urgency.
Though the October event is still months away, the travel package provider - Unity House Inc, has to have
a head count of potential commitments as soon as possible in order to lock in the best possible deal and
also to lock in the air and hotel spaces... in the meantime, details for definite commitments will be posted
and mailed as soon as they are received.
Besides mailing in the registration-attendance forms, it would also be a good idea to inform either Pearl,
myself, or any of the others on the forms via email or phone to ensure those head counts are received as
quickly and as assuredly as possible... snail mail being what it is.

Apologies in advance if you have received this in error. if so, please inform me to be removed from the list.
If you don't recognize some of the names of the classmates below, well...
that's what yearbooks and reunions are for :
( KHS '60 & '61 reunion pics )

Please pass this email on to other classmates.
I'd like to keep this going, adding their responses to this list or one of yours...
as a reminder that hopefully for all of us, we have many years ahead to reunite again.

Hal Oshiro

Thanks Roy and Doug, for the words of wisdom.

Got it Pearl and posted, travel package info and dates.
If you haven't as yet responded to Pearl for any of the events, please do so ASAP.

Reminder again, the Monday, May 25th Reunion-Family Potluck has been cancelled.

Thanks for the great memories again Bing, we all look forward to seeing you and Hank.

Those were certainly good times Roy... and for just peanuts !

Since Saturday, May 23rd and Monday, May 25th at the moment have no events
scheduled, perhaps some of you may be thinking of a sort of mini-reunion of your
own on those days... especially with some expatriates already in town on those dates.
If you don't have contact info for anyone you'd like to get together with, I'll be happy
to provide an initial go-between per the usual method.
For those not familiar with that certain ( OK ... anal ) method that's used for all initial
contacts via the blog: just let me know the person's name and I'll contact them via
email, with your email address attached, to let them know of the contact request.
As most of you know, email addresses are not shown on the blog nor provided without
express approval.

Subject: Cherry Blossoms in DC

Hi Hal,

This past weekend was the peak of the Sakura here in DC.
Whenever they bloom I think of you and your family on your trip.

This year it was magnificent because the weather cooperated.
The peak was on Saturday at the same time as the Cherry Blossom parade.
This almost never happens.
On Saturday I took a bus tour of the Tidal Basin ... Hank had to go to his photography class.
The traffic was awful because the Capital was in lock down.
A man with a gun was causing concern and he finally committed suicide.

On Sunday Hank and I went to the National Arboretum to view the Sakura.
They have more species ... my favorite is the ones that look like weeping willows.
I think they are called maraschinos.
We ate sushi under the trees.
The sushi (tuna toro, salmon toro, Hamachi, and California roll with real crab) was
absolutely scrumptious.
In the late afternoon we went to Stanton Park, which is near our house on Capital Hill,
to sit among those trees.

Happy Hanami, See you soon.

Subject: Hawai‘i General Stores

I remember stopping by Ruger Market on the way home from Kaimuki Intermediate.
They had the best boiled peanuts.
We (Harry Azama, James Kaneshiro and me) would "chip-in" and buy a bag and eat the
peanuts while walking, tossing the shells on the road.
Those were good times.

There was a general store on Kauai that closed over 10 years ago.
We stopped for sodas.
The woman, (Alice I think), told us she was closing the store within a week.
We talked for a long time.
She wept while she told us many wonderful stories about herself and her family.
When we said our goodbyes and I tried to pay her for the sodas and chips, she waved her
hand and would not take the money.
We took our last look of the tiny white-washed store with its almost empty and dusty shelves.
We each gave her a hug and she smiled as I looked back from the rear-view mirror as we
drove off.
I can still "see" her waving her arm.
I'm sure she passed away, but I will never forget her kindness and generosity.
What happened to the beautiful and wonderful people like her.
She is one who will remain in the many chapters of my life.

April 10, 2015

Again... no fo'get... get those forms and notifications in ASAP.

Thanks for the heads-up Warren, noted and posted.

Subject: Found Karen Bertram!!

It is so wonderful when all works together for good!
Thanks to Hal and his tireless efforts to bring all Kaimuki Class of '60 together, I was sent
an obituary of Karen Bertram's mother from this past February in Colorado.
Listed were family, including Karen.
I then persevered with the names listed, and thinking that Karen lived in Texas, I tried the
names of relatives there in Colorado and left a message with one of them to please let Karen
know that her friend from high school was hoping to reconnect.
It turned out to be her grandson, and she lives nearby, so he called her and told her to come
over and listen to the message.
His number is unpublished, so who knows how I managed to find it... all works together for
good, that's what I believe.

Imagine my happiness, then, when about 3 hours later, my phone rang, and it was Karen!
She was just as happy to be found and that we were still thinking of her!
She had mentioned to her grandchildren, who marvel at her having lived in Hawaii, that she
had several good friends in school, and mentioned me and Caroline Andrade.
In speaking with her, she also remembered Paul Texeira and Mel Cabang as singers who
were recorded by her father.

She says that she and her husband will probably attend this year's reunion in Las Vegas!

I have promised to send her more information, and she would love to be added to the blog.
I will be sending you her email address and phone numbers, Hal.

Oh happy day!
She was such a sweet friend, and it's great to have found her well and happy.
I also recall how happy I was to be found by Carol!
It means a lot to be remembered.

Go Bulldogs!
Brenda Ignacio-Gore
